Die Darstellung seines Weges über 37 Jahre lässt nichts Wesentliches aus. Dabei wird in jeder Station auf van Goghs Gefühle, Eindrücke und Empfindungen detailliert eingegangen, seine intent herausgearbeitet, sein Scheitern, seine Irr- und Umwege nicht verschwiegen. Dieser einsame, oft eigenbrötlerische, schwierige Mann wird dem Leser mit seinen tiefen Gefühlen, seiner oft selbstkasteienden Religiosität wie auch mit seinen Hoffnungen, Wünschen, aber auch peinigenden Zweifeln nahegebracht.
